WordPress 2.0.2

Did some updates today after a lot of spam was hitting my mod queue i installed a plugin called akismet. It intercepts the spam before it hits my mod queue and brushes it into a corner of the admin pane of the blog in a section called “Akismet Spam”. I’ve also just added an addon which sits on the top left under the search panel telling all those bots out there how many spam posts it’s deleted to keep them away. I’m not sure if it’s working yet because I haven’t had any attacks since I brought it online.
If you do find your comments aren’t being posted let me know in case it has been flagged as spam by mistake, as I haven’t been in the habit of checking it before.

The next update was to get the latest version of the blog software WordPress running on here, version. Version 2 came out about 5 months ago so am pretty sure they must have ironed out all the major bugs. My friend stretch has been running it for a good few months and Adrian has upgraded today also

There wasn’t too much downtime, but i took the precaution of renaming the blog while I carried out the update. It also took longer than i thought because i missed copying a couple of the files somewhere along the line and while it did the update it wouldn’t load the blog or let me login giving a couple of parse errors.

Thinking it was because I hadn’t deleted some of the old files I deleted them, but it still failed. So I went through the laborious process of re-uploading every php file. Magically it loaded and I was back to the default theme with no plugins as I’d left it.

For about 1/2 hour you might have seen some odd effects as I re-enabled all the plugins and put the Benevolence theme back on at the same time (bad idea!) but do drop me a line if anything doesn’t seen to work.

Haven’t had a chance to test out the new features, but I’m not entirely enamoured by the new admin pane colours and stretch has offered this admin theme which i will look to install.
Assuming nothing went wrong member logins and passwords should be as before, but I did take a backup of the database just in case anything didn’t transfer properly.

So far so good though including ip2nation & the browser detect plugins

Nifty! I got the Gravatars to work in two themes I just can’t decide between. One needs to get a shape cut out of it so I can stick my photos in there (curves so pretty complicated stuff) and the other has a few anomalies after I changed the width (it was just too plain narrow) and the navigation to get back to the main blog page after viewing comments is out of whack. You have to change the URL by hand… So far I can’t get the comment preview to work in either themes… Looking through my old theme to get pointers in what goes where… *phew*

Have been playing around with plugins today – have just installed the useronline one and tweaked it a little – see if you can spot the twist.
It’s on the wp-useronline.php page – now if there’s a spam poster on there i can get instant access to where they are coming from and report them if necessary

Ok I clicked and I had installed that myself last night but finally opted to delete it from the code. I dunno it could have its uses like for spambots and zapbots  but I just thought that it would scare away the good visitor by showing their IPs… I dunno, it’s pretty tempting though. Showing IPs of certain people certainly is a total gas!

Ohh! Wanted to ask you stony. What is that nifty cool script for showing how many spambots were trapped with Akismet? I’d be interested in installing it too.

I like the convenience and i don’t get too many visitors who don’t know who i am
Just added the views plugin – is a bit weird that it’s set all my threads to 0 views so it looks a bit weird. Hopefully that’ll pick up soon
