Members Only

I can’t be bothered with dealing with spam comments, so as of tomorrow the blog’s gonna go members only to comment
I’m not gonna put restrictions on who can register, and if I need to upgrade your membership to allow gravatars i’m willing to do that
I haven’t been flooded with spam since the blog isn’t that active, though it did have a period where the moderation was picking up posts every day advertising sites selling Viagra and all the usual junk, but i traced that back to my Custom 404 page which had a link back to the blog. Soon fixed that and linked it back to the main page.
All was fine till today when i got three comments from two different IPs (one from the Netherlands the other in the US) with the same URL and email address – moderator picked them up.
Sorry if they were legitimate comments but they looked like spam to me so when the moderator picked them up – i deleted them

I’ve enabled registration by anyone, and as of tomorrow i’m gonna make registration compulsory to post a comment.
If you have any difficulty joining drop me an email with your login and password and i can create it for you. You should be able to change the password if you want to give me one that you don’t normally use so that you can change it to one you’ll remember (hope that makes sense)

So yeah, as of tomorrow sometime (when I remember) i’m gonna stop guest posting completely – of course you can register now and be prepared – there’s nothing stopping you

Sorry for any inconvenience but i don’t want to have to be dealing with spam on here

When I first got these I deleted them too but kept getting them anyway from the same IPs. Once I clicked on “Spam” instead of “Delete” that’s when the damn SpamBots had to start changing IPs ’cause WP kept the Spam IPs in memory somewhere… Maybe you should do the “Spam” thing instead. Even making comment posting Members-only won’t keep them away. You’ll always have to go in the Moderation Queue to mess with the damn crap.

It’s a good 404 isn’t it! I spent ages looking for good ones but that was the best by far
I see you’ve signed up to the blog so it proves the registration works, and i think members only is the way forward
If i still get spam i might go with your suggestions
So far looks like gravatars are ok, but if i need to promote people i think i can see how it’s done

Yep! Just wanted to know… has my change of password been registered? I changed it once I logged in but never received confirmation via email about the change… 😕

Speak of the devil! I had 3 Spam comments held up in Moderation for me this morning! So as you can see, members-only commenting doesn’t shield you much.

I think that once they find you, you’re done and you’ll have crap to clean up once in a while.

Anyway, marked them as Spam so at least they’ll have to go to the trouble of changing IPs.

Timmy got bombarded with spam bots like crazy last night. Considering his latest comments plug-in is like ours, i.e. it lists only the last 10 comments, I came in and caught a string of the last 10 comments that were posted, all of them, at 11:11p.m. all gibberish…

I came back later and there was the latest string that were all posted at 11:31p.m. and they were all different from the first ones I saw.

I did send an email warning to Tim though. Hope he has the energy and will to clean up the friggin’ mess.

I so hate bloody parasites, either spam bots or crazed MUF Admin stalkers like the one we know.
